Old Navy:Original Song

Old Navy:Original Song
Old Navy has released another original song, “Layer Player,” that it hopes will soon infect your brain and iPhone. It’s about on par with the saccharine “Super C-U-T-E” we were served up last month, but what’s really impressive this time around are the dancer’s moves, which at first blush almost look as computer-generated as her wardrobe changes. This is because she’s no mere mortal. Tyne Stecklein was one of 10 backup dancers chosen by Michael Jackson from a pool of 5,000 hopefuls for his would-be final tour, “This Is It,” which was canceled following his death in June 2009. The King of Pop even gets a nod in Old Navy’s dance routine. The 22-year-old Stecklein has been dancing since age 3 and has popped up in several movies, including High School Musical 2 and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Most recently, she was in the 2010 film Burlesque with Christina Aguilera and Cher. While online reaction to the new ad’s song is mixed at best, Stecklein seems to be building herself quite a vocal (and, of course, occasionally creepy) fan base on YouTube. The same was true of the last ad’s star, Melissa Molinaro, which makes you wonder if Old Navy will end up being more successful at picking talent than publishing songs.
