Mitch Miller : King Of Pre-Rock Pop Dead
Mitch Miller, the king of pre-rock pop recording who became a popular TV personality,has died at the excellent age of 99.
Miller was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys in 2000, when he still worked actively as a guest conductor. Throughout his life, he was noted for the considerable energy and self-confidence that accompanied his musical ability. Even during the Great Depression, he never lacked for work.
Miller started with Mercury Records in the late '40s, first on the classical side, later with popular music, before taking over Columbia's popular records division.
In later years, Miller returned to his classical roots, appearing frequently as a guest symphony orchestra conductor. He conducted the Cincinnati Pops several times between 1976 and 1986, at Music Hall and Riverbend.
